LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller description:

The Akai LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller is a USB Midi controller for musicians, producers, DJs and other music creators.

The Akai LPD 8 Laptop Pad is less than 13 inches across and weighs less than one pound to easily fit into a laptop case or backpack for extreme portability.

The Akai LPD8 is based on Akai Professional's MPC line of iconic music product stations. The LPD8 has eight blue light-up pads that are velocity sensitive for programming rhythmic or melodic parts. The pads can also send program-change information to software. The LPD8 also has eight assignable Q-Link knobs to which users can assign virtually any parameters in their software for hands-on control.

The Akai LPD 8 features plug and play technology for Mac and PC systems. No software driver installation or wall power is needed. The Akai LPD8 has four memory banks for programming and recalling settings appropriate to different software programs they use.

Review:
Once you get it going it works fine. However what they don't tell you is that you can't configure the pads on the fly whilst your DAW is running which is a real howler in terms of usefulness . It means that you need to spend time setting up presets before opening up Logic, but even then, the inability to quickly assign a pad whilst working (without having to close Logic down) makes this far less usable than I had hoped.

Pros: +
The pads feel great and the whole unit has a pretty solid feel. It's not too big so fits easily onto a crowded desk in the studio.I use it with Ableton a lot and it makes controlling/arranging/playing scenes a lot easier. Even simple things like using it to tap in the tempo has become a lot more accurate. Okay, I could do all this and more with an APC20/40 but for the money it's a great, simple device.

Cons: -
It's own editing software isn't so great or intuitive.

Pros: +
Easy to use. Plug and play functionality with Ableton as it s now recognised as a control surface and will automap to macros.

Cons: -
Haven't used it out much. Might not last too long as I would rate the build quality as only fair. The responsiveness of the pads is not great either.
