Musicman launched the StingRay Bass Guitar in 1976, and its design was assisted by guitar and bass expert Leo Fender. What made the StingRay different from other popular electric bass guitars at the time of its release was the inclusion of a 'soapbar' humbucking pickup and an active, battery-powered preamp. Originally featuring only a 2-band EQ (Bass and Treble), some StingRay models are now equipped with a 3-band EQ, adding a Middle control for midrange frequencies.
Most models have an Ash wood body with a maple neck, and there are both maple and rosewood fingerboard options. The 'soapbar' pickup provides a punchy sound with an incredible midrange, ideal for rock and funk playing and percussive, slapping techniques.
Musicman have more recently released different versions of the StingRay, some with additional pickup combinations or 5 strings. Famous players of the StingRay have included Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Tim Commerford (Rage Against The Machine), Rick Wills (Foreigner) and Alex James (Blur).
With a huge collection of StingRay models, ranging from 4-string 2EQ and 3EQ models to 5-string, double humbucker pickup models, you are sure to find a Stingray bass to suit your needs and playing style.
