ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Modeler Pedal description:

The Behringer ADI21 V-TONE ACOUSTIC Acoustic Amp Modeler/Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box. Acquire natural warmth and presence for your acoustic guitar, as if you were running the signal through a tube preamp.

The Behringer ADI21 V-TONE ACOUSTIC produces natural warmth and presence as if you were running the signal through a tube preamp. This Behringer product has been designed to compete head to head with leading products on the market. There is an ultra-musical 3-band EQ with sweepable mids for accurate feedback control and eliminating the harsh harmonics of piezos. Super-high impedance lets you retain maximum signal integrity and dynamics. Use the ADI21 either for direct recording output with tube/microphone emulation or as a standard active direct injection box. The output is laid out on TS or balanced, gold-plated XLR connectors. A ground lift switch eliminates typical ground loop problems, and it runs on a 9 V battery or a DC power supply (not included).

The main features of the Behringer ADI21 V-TONE ACOUSTIC include:

  • Acquire natural warmth and presence for your acoustic guitar, as if you were running the signal through a tube preamp
  • Ultra-musical 3-band EQ with sweepable mids for accurate feedback control and to eliminate the harsh harmonics of piezos
  • Super-high impedance to retain maximum signal integrity and dynamics

  • Output available on TS or balanced, gold-plated XLR connectors
  • Ground lift switch eliminates typical ground loop problems
  • Runs on 9 V battery or DC power supply (not included)

Review:
I use it to feed my acoustic guitar into a mixer or recorder. The guitar is fitted with a transducer but I also tried it with an electromagnetic pickup. It worked well with both. It generates a small amount of noise if the level and blend knobs are maxed but dial them back a bit and it's fine. I don't have a Sansamp tech 21 on which the ADI21 is based to make a comparison - maybe the Sansamp is better - I may never know but the point is this unit does what I want for next to nothing. Note - a You Tube reviewer complained about distorted sound - I have not experienced this.

Review:
I was looking for an effect to calm down the piezo sound from my Ovation Celebrity just a little bit. This box helps, my style is fairly basic strumming with some flat picking. Not had it long enough to try it in public yet.

The 3 band eq with swept middle is fairly standard and shapes your tone OK, low noise.

The 'blend' knob introduces the claimed mic/tube pre-amp simulation. At zero, no tube, at full right 100 tube, as expected with a mix of dry and effected signal in-between. The tube sound darkens the sound a little and compresses it so that the piezo highs get some attenuation. I don't know what a real mic and tube would sound like but I guess something similar. The main issue is that if I have too much input from my guitar pre-amp the pedal input distorts, so follow what it says in the manual and keep input level down from guitar. (Hence only 3 stars, there should be an input gain knob, otherwise 4 stars).

It is possible to set levels and blend such that the unprocessed signal (LED off) and the processed signal (LED on) are similar volume which should make this pedal OK for live switching. I set unprocessed tone using the guitar on-board pre amp and use pedal to modify tone and add compression.
