The Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar is one of the most famous and iconic electric guitars of all time. Originally released in 1952 as a result of a collaboration between Lester William 'Les Paul' Polfus and Gibson guitars, the Les Paul rivalled the other popular electric guitar brands, producing an alternative to the original 'flat-top', solid-body electric guitar.

Taking influence from Gibson's hollow body guitars, the Les Paul's body was designed with an arched top and featured a single-cutaway. The original model encountered a few problems, and was modified until its winning formula was finally found in 1957 with the Tune-O-Matic bridge for more stable tuning and intonation. The body of a Les Paul Standard is made of of solid mahogany capped with a carved maple top, giving the guitar its shape and natural sustain. Arguably, the most important part of the Les Paul is its neck, which is also made of mahogany but features a rosewood or ebony fingerboard. With the neck glued in and set into the body, the Les Paul creates a natural wood tone and increased sustain.

The Les Paul has been championed by a number of iconic guitarists, including Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Gary Moore, Peter Green and Slash.
