Gibson's Collector's Choice '59 Les Paul series makes it possible to own a recreation of a specific guitar from the few Les Paul Standards created in 1959. Once again working with a specific '59 and its owner allowed Gibson's Custom Shop full access so that it could be analyzed, digitally scanned and measured from every conceivable perspective. Now Gibson Custom can faithfully recreate the individual personality of a specific serial number of '59 bringing its magic within reach of a limited number of owners. The details of finish, material, wear and tone in the Collector's Choice range are as near to a perfect re-creation of each guitar’s current condition as is humanly possible.
The Gibson Custom Shop Collectors Choice (#2) Les Paul 'Goldie' is a stunning recreation of a speacial 1959 Les Paul Electric Guitar, stamped with the serial number '9-0629', that features a distinguising golden 'no-burst' finish, created from the result of time, light exposure and climate on the original finish - described as 'Aged Green Lemon'. The original, wide, subtle flame shows through more perceptibly than it did over 50 years ago, when it left the bench of final assembly and headed out of Kalamazoo towards somewhere near Deerfield, Texas. Similar to nitrocellulose lacquer, the aniline dyes used to stain the back of a 1959 Les Paul, also faded with exposure to light and age. For this reason, "Goldie’s” mahogany back is a soft, mellow brown, a significant transformation from its original red. Delicate checking of the finish is consistent with its 50 years of wear. Fortunately for those of us fascinated by the movement of precious obiects through time and space, the trajectory of "Goldie", from Kalamazoo to the collection of its current owner is mostly documented, with only the first few years of its life somewhat of a mystery.
The Collectors Choice No.2 features Burstbucker 1 Bridge and Burstbucker 3 Neck humbucker pickups, which have been analyzed to deliver the guitar’s current tonal characteristics and aged charm.
