Modular GrooveBox Bundle description:

Combing all three of the incredible Korg Volca units in one package the Volca Modular Groovebox Bundle is the ultimate analogue synth package at a bargain price. Including the Volca Beats, Volca Bass and Volca Keys units.

The Korg Volca Beats Rhythm Machine is an analogue drum synth and an Electribe style sequencer in a compact, battery powered form. With a tip of the hat to the analogue grooveboxes of yesteryear, the Volca Beats brings the power and fat sounds of analogue drum machines that integrate into your DAW environment via MIDI. Featuring analogue oscillators for the Kick, Snare, Toms and Hi Hats, the Volca Beats brings you a distinctive tone where acoustic drums fall short. There are also controls for crafting the individual sounds, including click, pitch and decay meaning you can tailor the overall sound to the music material.

Korg has also included a PCM engine, covering the percussion, clap, claves, agogo and crash. The engine has been developed for a Lo-Fi and rough sound to add character to the overall instrument and compliment the analogue drum section with controls for pitch and speed. The Volca Beats also includes an Electribe-style sequencer for the easy input of rhythm patterns. You can use each of the 16 step keys per voice to enter the notes as the sequencer is running, getting visual feedback from the LEDs within the measure. There’s also a stutter function to add drum rolls and delay effects.

The main highlights of the Volca Beats include:

  • Real analog sounds created with reference to classic rhythm machines
  • Maximum effect from minimal parameters - a unique advantage of analog
  • PCM sound engine expands possibilities when used with analog sounds
  • Loop sequencer distilled from the Electribe series
  • The Electribe series step sequencer
  • Stutter function generates repeated triggers that dramatically change the sequence
  • Active Step function generates new bass lines by removing or inserting steps.
  • Step Jump function instantly plays only the step you're pressing
  • Convenient functions for incredible ease of use
  • SYNC jack and MIDI IN connector allow synchronized performances with multiple units or with your DAW
  • Compact size, battery-powered operation, and built-in speaker for enjoyment anywhere

The Korg Volca Bass is an Electribe-inspired analogue bass sequencer, offered in a compact size. Drawing inspiration from the Korg Monotron and Monotribe range, the Volca Bass takes care of the low end duties of the new Volca series of analogue synthesizer grooveboxes. Featuring three oscillators, an envelope generator, a newly designed filter, a VCA and an LFO, the Volca Bass uses a simple architecture with plenty of options for crafting a unique tone. The Volca Bass can also be connected and controlled by your DAW via MIDI.

The three analogue oscillators can be used in unison to generate fat, modulated sounds or each of the oscillators can be pitched to make three note chords, of which each note can be independently sequenced to make complex and evolving phrases. When used together, the three oscillators can be slightly detuned for thick unison sounds.

The Volca Bass utilises a new filter circuit that has been developed specifically for bass frequencies offering a brighter, crisper sound when completely open, to wide and round as the cut off is reduced. Korg has also included a resonance control for making the sound wet and squelchy as well as driving the filter into distortion – perfect for acid bass lines.

The sequencer section of the Korg Volca Bass is a direct descendant of the Electribe making it easy to add or remove notation on the fly to really enhance your performance. There are 16 easy to use step keys that allow you to enter individual notes whilst getting LED feedback from the position in the sequence. You can also input notes in real time using the touch panel keyboard and up to eight sequence patterns can be stored in the internal memory.

The main functions of the Korg Volca Bass include:

  • Newly designed analog filter for crisp, bright response
  • Simple structure with single VCF, VCA, LFO, and EG
  • Loop sequencer distilled from the Electribe series
  • Step Sequencer distilled from the Electribe series
  • Slide function that’s indispensable for acid and other types of electronic music
  • Active Step function generates new bass lines by removing or inserting steps
  • Convenient functions for ease of use
  • Self-tuning function overcomes pitch drift - the weak point of an analog synth
  • SYNC jack and MIDI IN connector allow synchronized performances with multiple units or with your DAW
  • Compact size, battery-powered operation, and built-in speaker for enjoyment anywhere

The Korg Volca Keys is a polyphonic analogue synthesizer with a built in Electribe-style sequencer.

Featuring three voices and 27 keys, the Volca Keys generates powerful and tuneful chords and melodies in a compact form. Utilising a simple structure of three VCOs, one VCF, one VCA, one LFO and an EG, Korg has packed in everything you’d need to get into true analogue synthesis, and the Volca Keys compliments the Volca Bass and Volca Beats range of analogue instruments. The three oscillators can be used in unison to generate thick, lead lines or to play chords. It’s a great way to get into the world of sound design and synthesis.

The filter section is derived from the miniKORG 700S from the ‘70s and offers bright, chunky tones when open and rounds out when the cut off is lowered. The voicing function is an awesome way of dealing with how the oscillators are combined, with a simple, one knob operation with six combinations to choose from - Poly, Unison, Fifth, Unison Ring and Poly Ring. This gives you a massive scope to develop a unique and wide variety of sounds.

The Electribe style sequencer section lets you record phrases as you play them as well as to use the keys for individual note input, easily creating loops and phrases, while up to eight sequence patterns can be stored in the internal memory. To add further movement to the sequence there is also a delay effect which adds depth and dimension just like an analogue delay unit.

The main features of the Korg Volca Keys include:

  • Simple three-voice analog synthesizer
  • Voicing function lets anyone create sounds easily
  • Delay effect for even more sonic possibilities
  • Loop sequencer lets you record phases just as you play them
  • Use the Motion Sequence function to meticulously craft your loops
  • Use the Active Step function and Flux function to add dynamic change to your sequences
  • Self-tuning function overcomes pitch drift - the weak point of an analog synth
  • SYNC jack and MIDI IN connector allow synchronized performances with multiple units or with your DAW
  • Compact size, battery-powered operation, and built-in speaker for enjoyment anywhere
