SQ-1 2x8 Step Sequencer description:

The Korg SQ-1 2x8 Step Sequencer may be compact in size but it has a huge range of functionality. It's large wealth of connection jacks allow it to easily be connected to the MS-20W and other various synthesizers.

The SQ-1 provides two channels (A and B) of 8 step sequencing that can operate consecutively, or be used in many other modes. For example, you can run A and B one after the other to function as a 16-step sequencer, and then ignore the order and make the steps play randomly. Or you can use A and B to control different parameters as they run in parallel. From simple sequences to complex changes, you can choose from a variety of modes to suit your needs.

The 2 x 8 step buttons can be used to turn notes on/off, or if you use the MODE button, it will switch their function. This opens powerful possibilities such as letting you “perform” the sequence itself, as on a volca unit.

The SQ-1 connectors include two CV/GATE OUT channels, the standard MIDI OUT and USB MIDI, littleBits out (to connect to the littleBits synth kit by littleBits Electronics Inc.) and the SYNC IN/OUT channel that allows you to connect to the volca series and monotribe.

The SQ-1 is housed in a compact, sheet-metal body making it very sturdy and durable. The unit can be powered by either two AA batteries or over USB bus power.

The main features of the Korg SQ-1 2x8 Step Sequencer include:

  • 2x8 Step Sequencer
  • Sequences in quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes
  • MIDI Out
  • CV-A OUT-Gate jack
  • CV-BOUT-Gate jack
  • IN-SYNC-Out jack
  • USB Jack
  • Powered by two AA batteries (included)

Review:
Early analogue sequencing passed me by in the early days of synths so I bought the SQ-1 along with the MS20 Mini. This thing is just a joy to use and has a multitude of configurations.

Review:
Easy to use and well built especially at the price point. Works perfectly Hz/V (Yamaha CS5) and V/Oct (Voyager Old School) synths as well as Korg's volca beats and synths with midi. Most importantly it's fun!

If you want to control some old vintage analogue kit, chances are this little beauty will help you out.
I use one to control an old Realistic Moog Concertmate and it works seamlessly, I'll also buy another just to control my Yamaha CS-5 which uses Hz per octave as opposed to volts per octave. The SQ1 copes with that easily, unlike the Doepfer DT which does not have that option. At £87.00 it's easily affordable to purchase multiple units and sync them up effortlessly.

Just buy as many as you can afford (or need) these are an absolute bargain..

Biggest downside for me is the little tune knobs which make it a little harder to tune the little critter. I can put up with that at this price though..

Others have moaned about midi functionality but this seems a bit pointless on an analogue sequencer to me, I clock my Doepfer modular via midi then clock out of the A-190-4 to the sync in on the SQ1 if necessary, works perfectly.

I've also seen loads of posts trying to compare this to the Doepfer Dark Time.. THIS IS NOT A DOEPFER AND WILL NEVER REPLACE THE DT. I still intend to purchase another DT as the build quality and features are still well worth the lolly.

Review:
Great little unit. Very compact yet versatile. Lots of connection options (midi, cv, little bits out and volca clock sync). Very sturdy, not like the volca series, metal body and solid knob feel. Well done Korg!

Review:
Excellent compact little sequencer, fraction size of the original SQ-10! Great for controlling old Korgs with Hz/V as well as more regular V/Oct. Also has MIDI out, although you need to buy a MIDI DIN to 3.5 mm (TRS Stereo) jack for that. Sync out for Volcas etc.Overall easy to use & very flexible, very Volca like. Can be used with Volcas too of course.

Review:
Pound for Pound probably the best value sequencer on the market -2 x 8 steps or 16 steps combined, slide mode, Midi out, CV and Gate out for connection to modular, easily playable - even with the small knobs. Just packed full of features - Octave (voltage control) and will connect to korgs with frequency control or Volts/Octave - Brilliant!
