M 201 TG Hypercardioid Dynamic Directional Microphone description:

The Beyerdynamic M 201 TG Hypercardioid Dynamic Directional Microphone

Introducing the Beyerdynamic M 201 TG hypercardioid dynamic directional microphone, a classic dynamic microphone for all instrumental applications. Developed especially for studio and outdoor applications, the m201 can suit a number of applications such as recording speech and vocals to instrumental recordings such as drums and strings.

The M201 is a truly sensitive microphone offering a reliable response. It is designed in a unique way to reduce handling noise, making it especially useful as an audience response microphone in TV studios and location production for vocals and sound effects. It incorporates a ‘hum-buck’ coil that rejects interference from mains powered devices such as video monitors. It is also often the chosen microphone for recording snare drums, hi-hats, rack toms and percussion because of its small size and uniform response.

A classic from the ‘workhorse stable’, the Beyerdynamic M 201 TG microphone offers superb reliability, undisputed clarity and performance.

Pros: +
I've been using the Beyerdynamic m201 to mic up bass cabs and it sounds great. Its quite hi-fi sounding with plenty of low end and doesn't pickup much surrounding stage spill. Overall a great mic and built to last.

Cons: -
Its expensive compared to a Shure SM57 but well worth the extra outlay in my mind.

I bought this to use with an alto sax. I did not want a vocal mic or instrument mic like an SM57 which has a mid range lift and the M201 is supposed to have fairly flat response. I found the signal from it to be very clear, but a bit lacking in body and quite bright. I haven't tried it in a live performance yet but I'm guessing this will turn out to be a good thing and the sax won't sound muddy through the pa. However, when I checked it out through my home recording setup it didn't sound very good. After much experimenting I found eq settings that filled out the sound and rolled off the top end and left me with a decent recorded sound. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to use similar eq settings with the pa.

By comparison, the M201 is much better than my SE Electronics SE2A small diaphragm condenser (which is half the price), but nowhere near as good as my AT4033 large diaphragm condenser mic (which is twice the price) so it seems like reasonable value for money.

The M201 has very low output! I could only get it to record at all through my Focusrite audio interface my turning the mic pre-amp all the way up.

Despite it being a hypercardiod mic, I could move around a fair amount without affecting its ability to pick up the sound.

I have owned one of these for about 20 yrs, bought another to make up a pair. Recording a string quartet for learning feedback. Rugged, accurate, very directional, good scope to play with the sound by positioning. Just easy to work with. Superb results.
