The Schoeps MK8 is part of the Colette series of modular capsules designed for use with the CMC preamplifiers.
Thanks to its special mechanical pattern-switching arrangement, three directional patterns can be selected with the MK6, despite its single- diaphragm design. Unlike dual-diaphragm capsules, in the omnidirectional setting it is a true pressure transducer with flat response down to the lowest frequencies.
As with the MK5, the patterns are set mechanically, without any intermediate position. When the ribbed cap of the capsule is rotated, a system of internal shutters alters the acoustic chambering around the diaphragm to change its characteristic from omni to cardioid to figure-8, then back through cardioid to omni. (There is no functional difference between the two cardioid positions.)
With a similar feature to the MK8, the 0 degrees axis is perpendicular to the body of the microphone, and is indicated by a red dot at the lower rim of the capsule. A black dot marks the 180 direction. As with any microphone whose switchable patterns include the figure-8, the frequency response is neither as flat nor as extended in the high- frequency region as with the other capsules in the range. In the figure-8 position, the MK6 closely resembles the MK8.
