sE2200a II Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone description:

The sE Electronics sE2200a II is a continuation of the award-winning sE2200 condenser microphone series, this latest version now featuring a dual diaphragm for multi-pattern recording.

The sE2200a II uses the same hand-crafted, 1" gold sputtered diaphragm as the sE2200a, ensuring a smooth and musical result. A pair of these tried-and-tested transducers in the mk2 version allows for cardioid, figure-of-8 and omni patterns, opening up the door to many more recording applications, including stereo recording, m/s, ambient micing and voice-overs.

Finished in the now-customary sE black rubberised paint finish, the se2200a II not only looks stylish, but has reduced chassis resonance that can colour the sound adversely. The mic also features a pad switch for higher-level recording situations as well as the pick-up pattern selector. Initially, this microphone will include a shock-mount and pop screen that fits directly to the suspension mounting. Although this is only an introductory offer, after which the shock and pop will be available separately.

I can't recommend this mic highly enough. Having used a basic sub-£100 Behringer mic for several years, this new SE mic reveals levels of detail and clarity, even without EQ, that I could simply never achieve with my previous setup. There's no doubt that the extra sheen and presence it gives your recordings more than justifies the price - I would have been happy to pay double considering how big an upgrade this is for my sound. I recently used this to record a cello and the combination of rich warmth and crisp high end was really pleasing. The sound does tend towards the high end so if you're used to using the low cut filter on a cheaper mic to reduce muddiness I would recommend trying the SE on its unfiltered flat setting first - it manages to be warm without losing precision, and certainly for higher-octave vocals you could argue that the sound risks becoming too thin if you use the low cut. With a mic this good straight out of the box, the less fiddling, the better!

My only gripe is that the quality of the included accessories seems to have been downgraded since the previous model (I borrowed the original version off a friend). You no longer get the hard metal carrying case, and the shock mount is now a slightly brittle-feeling plastic rather than metal, but these are minor issues considering that the mic would be worth the price alone - the accessories are just an added bonus.
