Instrument Reflexion Filter by sE Electronics

Would you like tighter, punchier, and more detailed recordings?

The sE Electronincs Instrument Reflexion Filter (IRF) is a small format portable isolation screen and acoustic absorber for better instrumental recording.

The Instrument Reflexion Filter(IRF) is designed on the same principles as its sibling the Reflexion Filter. It forms a small curved wall of punched Aluminium, with layers of polyester fibreboard separated with air gaps, which helps reduce room ambience and isolates the microphone from ambient noise.

The Instrument Reflexion Filter has a hole punched through it to allow a pencil mic such as the sE Electronics sE4 Condenser Microphone be fixed through it. This is useful for recording close to an instrument to aid track separation in your live recording session. Please note that the 1.125" diameter mounting hole is not suitable for large microphones. The Instrument Reflexion Filter (IRF) is ideal for use with individual percussion instruments, guitar amplifiers, pianos, drum overheads and wind instruments, whereas the original Reflexion Filter is used primarily for vocals.

The main function is to help obtain a ‘dry’ instrument recording. This is especially useful in a project studio without proper acoustic treatment, but can also be used to help record in control rooms or in rehearsal studios to reduce ambient noise.

For a limited period, the sE4 Condenser Microphone is available with a FREE Instrument Reflexion Filter, saving you over £100.

The Technical Bit:

The Instrument Reflexion Filter has layers. Firstly, a strong layer of punched Aluminium which allows sound waves to pass through it, diffused, to a layer of absorptive wool. The sound waves then hit a layer of Aluminium foil which helps dissipate energy and break up the lower frequency wave-forms, and from here they hit an air space kept open by rods passing through the various layers. The air gap acts as an acoustic barrier. The sound waves then pass to a further layer of wool and then through an outer, punched, Aluminium wall which further serve to absorb then diffuse the remaining acoustic energy. The various layers both absorb and diffuse the sound waves hitting them, so progressively less of the original source acoustic energy passes through each layer. This reduces the amount of energy hitting un-treated walls and other surfaces so there is less of the original source reflected back as unwanted room ambience to the mic. Simple, effective and the work of a British company (well done James).

Summary

The Instrument Reflexion Filter from sE Electronics is a smaller version of their Reflexion Filter, designed specifically for instrument recording. The Instrument Reflexion Filter is a perfect solution for recording environments that are less than perfect, reducing room reflections and unwanted ambiance and thus can help you to create tighter, punchier, and more detailed recordings.
