The Fender Select Series has arrived, looking sleek and luxuriant in their spectacular one-off finishes, and with top spec hardware appointments that bring the very best in modern Fender tone, the Fender Select series of guitars has been causing a significant stir. Each of these instruments is USA-built and resplendent in either flamed maple or gorgeous Koa, and have been built very much as a player’s guitar as well as a collectors' item.
The necks are built from hand-picked flamed maple, quarter-sawn and compound-radius in design with rosewood or maple fingerboards, while proprietary Fender Select pickups are voiced with what Fender describes as a ‘masterful tone’. The second tone pot, incidentally, features a no-load position that allows the circuit to bypass the pot altogether when it is fully on, making for true and pure Fender sonics. Special appointments like black pearloid position markers and satin lacquer finishes make for truly special guitars that the Fender enthusiast will adore. A hard case, strap and polishing cloth are all included in the price of the guitar.
There are several models available in the range, all built to exacting standards but tweaked for each body shape and model. All of the most classic Fender designs are included here:
The Fender Select Stratocaster comes in two options – an S/S/S design with an alder body, flame maple top and neck, rosewood board and finished in a Dark Cherry Burst, or an H/S/S model, built with the same tonewoods but a maple fingerboard and Antique Burst finish.
There are four Telecasters in the range – first up is an ash-bodied model with flamed maple top, a birdseye maple fingerboard, and the stunning combination of gold hardware with a Violin Burst finish. Alternatively there’s a Telecaster that’s almost identical save for the chrome hardware for those of you who prefer to keep it subtle. For those who don’t, there’s an amber-finished, paulownia-bodied Tele too, the deep finish of which almost glows in the light.
Then there’s the Koa Select Telecaster – this utterly stunning model benefits from a paulownia (a.k.a. empress) body with a carved koa top that brings out the grain and pattern of this rare wood perfectly. It’s also notably the only Tele with a rosewood board – complementing the body woods – and is finished in an eye catching Sienna Edge Burst.
The Fender P Bass also has its own Select variant – an alder body, flame maple top and neck and Select pickups and electronics (the no-load is present on the basses too) are brought to life by a classic 2-colour sunburst.
Meanwhile, the Fender Select Jazz Bass sports the same woods but with a rosewood fingerboard and an amber burst finish that looks unusual and eye-catching on the J-style body, making this appealing choice for the collector.
We’re absolutely blown away by this top-class range, and suspect a great many players will be impressed by this more refined take on the usual Fender style. If you’re a Fender player looking for a fresh twist on a familiar design, or a player searching for a fantastic introduction to the world of these universally popular guitars, the Fender Select range demands your attention.
