In 1958 Gibson replaced the Les Paul Gold Top with the Standard model, an identical guitar except for the three-tone sunburst finish. At last the maple-top could be seen!
Fifty years on, the Gibson Custom Shop proudly introduces the Vintage Original Spec™ series of historic solid body guitars which include a beautiful reproduction of the Gibson 1958 Les Paul Standard VOS
"Plain Top." This is as close as Gibson has ever come to producing a guitar that might just have popped out of a time machine set to go back to that year and to recreating one of the finest guitars ever made.
Why was it called a “Plain Top”? Well, some Les Pauls came with figured maple tops but the greatest proportion of ‘58 sunburst Les Pauls had relatively plain maple tops. The Custom Shop ’58 VOS has an elegant carved top, a bound mahogany neck with long neck tenon, and the original, historically accurate '50s rounded neck profile, cream single-ply binding and a new, proprietary finishing process that yields the gently aged patina of a vintage classic. The rosewood fingerboard has acrylic trapezoid inlays that are both accurate in shape and colour, nickel-plated hardware, and vintage "tulip" tuners complete the package.
If you're looking for vintage looking Les Paul that's as historically accurate as anything Gibson has built over the past few decades, the 1958 Les Paul Standard VOS Plain Top fits the bill; revolutionary new handcrafting process produces the most comfortable, best playing guitars made today — you can feel the difference. Solid mahogany back — not book-matched or weight-relieved. Historically accurate long neck tenon for superior strength and sustain, period correct neck profiles, hardware and electronics and 100% nitro-cellulose lacquer finish.
