In 1962 a number of independent guitar makers from in Japan got together to produce guitars under one brand name, Takamine, which means ‘high mountain’. At first Takamine built mainly concert guitars but over the years the number of steel string acoustic guitars increased. In 1968 the internationally renowned guitar luthier Mass Hirade joined Takamine. He introduced the ‘Hirade-Master series’ and was subsequently responsible for the start of international business; since then Takamine guitars have been available worldwide.

Takamine started to experiment with pick ups at a very early stage and now has extensive expertise in this field. Takamine made great advancements with their palethetic pickup, and set the standard for the industry. Other manufacturers soon offered acoustic/electric models, but none has reached the level of sophistication and performance set by Takamine; the pickups are like no other, an integral part of the guitar's design, not a retrofit like most other "factory" systems. Six individual piezo transducers are embedded in the bridge plate where they sense both string and soundboard vibration. Takamine also pioneered the slider control preamp style for the electro-acoustic guitar. No other guitar company had the technological advancements that Takamine set in place, and to this day no other guitar company can achieve that level of quality in the market.

Today Takamine produces various different series, ranging from high priced models to the budget priced Takamine G series.

The Takamine guitar range is now available from Digital Village online, in-store or via telephone mail-order. Contact any DV store for Takamine
