GXD 4 DSP PA Power Amplifier description:

The QSC GXD 4 DSP PA Power Amplifier  offers high peak output power with up to 1600 watts from the GXD 4 and a whopping 4500 Watts from the GXD 8. The power levels are matched to the most popular loudspeakers and optimized for maximum real-world headroom into 4Ω and 8Ω speaker systems with class D output stage and a universal power supply for high performance and efficiency.

Extensive and powerful loudspeaker processing is also built in whilst other features include high and low-pass filters, 4-band parameteric EQ, limiting, and delay.

The front panel houses a large LCD display to simplify amplifier setup and indicates amp status.

Parallel XLR and 1/4” TRS connectors inputs are placed on the back of the unit for compatibility with any source while providing convenient loop-thru capability. In terms of outputs, professional binding post and NL4 connectors (compatible with NL2) provide for mono and bi-amp speaker connections.

Finally, LEDs on the front panel indicate signal presence, input overload, and amplifier clipping.

The main features of the QSC GXD 4 DSP PA Power Amplifier include:

  • PA Power Amplifier
  • 2x 600 Watts At 4 Ohms
  • Class-D Amplifier Circuit
  • On-Board DSP Filters
  • Front Panel LEDs
  • XLR and TRS input connectors

I have two GXD4's, using with RAMSA WS-A200 & WS-A240 subs, wired 2 per ch4 ohms. They are nice and light, and the DSP functionality is good. I'm using 1 channel for the subs (power limiters set to 500W), and the other for full-range, limited to 300W, so they have bags of headroom and the speakers aren't stressed. Most recently, I used them in a 150 capacity function room, and they worked VERY well.

However.... with no audio signal, the amps are a little hissy, and also make a repetitive digital glitch noise, which is clearly audible if you walk in front of the speakers. They do this even with inputs completely disconnected and the gain/attenuator dialled down full, so it's definitely noise from the amps. I doubt this will pose a problem for use in bars or clubs where there is already background noise, but in a quiet room people may notice.

They also make a squeak at turn-on, and a pop at switch-off. I would think by now we would have eliminated this from all but the cheapest bits of kit ? This implies that despite costing £500, they don't have output protection relays ?

So, overall 4 stars. They're good, powerful, efficient, and lightweight, but I feel they're let down by the digital noise (probably from the DSP), and the lack of muting at switch-on and off.

QSC have released a firmware update which may fix these issues. TBD....
