DR-05 V2 Portable Digital Recorder description:

The TASCAM DR-05 V2 Portable Digital Recorder brings high-quality stereo recording to an easy-to-use portable powerhouse. The Tascam DR-05 records in MP3 or WAV format – including 96kHz/24-bit high-resolution audio – to microSD or microSDHC media. A pair of all-new microphones handles up to 125dB SPL with the sensitivity to capture every detail. With recording features like Peak Reduction and Quick Menu, the DR-05 puts album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.

The DR-05’s digital and analog circuit boards are built separately to increase noise performance, with a low-impedance design to further decrease hiss. A separate power supply is sent to the A/D and D/A converter for even better audio performance. The result is clean sound quality – over 92dB signal to noise ratio, under 0.05% total harmonic distortion and 20Hz to 40kHz response (-1/+3dB) at 96kHz/24-bit resolution. The Peak Reduction feature automatically sets your recording level by listening to the input and adjusting for the best level. Unlike Auto Gain settings, this one only goes down to prevent accidental distortion after a period of low level like a break.

Peak Recording works in rehearsal mode or in record, so if the performance is louder than the soundcheck you’re still safe. Used with the built-in limiter, it’s unlikely you’ll distort your career-making live recording. Other classic TASCAM features are included, like Variable Speed Audition to loop and slow down music without changing the pitch – perfect for transcribing or learning new music. A Level Align function can be switched on for playback, to smooth out any sudden volume jumps, and a built-in speaker is also provided. The two AA batteries are enough to power the recorder for 17.5 hours, even while recording at CD quality.

The main features of the Tascam DR-05 Portable Digital Recorder include:

  • Built-in stereo condenser omnidirectional microphones with sensitivity up to 125dB SPL
  • Up to 96kHz/24-bit WAV (BWF) linear PCM recording
  • Stereo MP3 recording from 32-320 kbps bit rate
  • Peak reduction function, optimized for music recording, automatically sets the gain of while recording
  • Limiter and low-cut filter to help prevent distortion
  • Automatic or manual level setting
  • Variable speed playback (50%-150%) without changing the pitch
  • Loop and repeat playback
  • Level align feature prevents uneven volume levels during playback
  • Playback EQ setting
  • Editing function (divide and delete)
  • Chromatic tuner
  • 1/8” stereo mic/line input
  • USB 2.0 port for transfer to PC and external power

Review:
I'm an electronics engineer, with some experience in the audio industry. I think this is a very good product. I've used it for recording guitar an vocals, spoken word, sound effects and live music and had very clear and natural sounding recordings. I recommend you download the Reference Manual from the website http//tascam.com/product/dr-05/downloads/ as the supplied one is rather limited.

Some things I have found ...
When adjusting the audio level, the up/down buttons make clicks which are picked up by the internal microphones, but the automatic modes are good - I particularly like the peak mode which reduces the level after a peak and leaves it at the new level - just what you want for music.

There is no way to adjust the left and right channel levels independently.

The hold switch is barely mentioned in the manual and serves to lock the keyboard - can be confusing.

Some of the button legends are almost invisible, being grey on a grey background.

The 92dB S/N ratio is not good enough for 24bit digital audio, there is nothing to be gained over 16bit, which can reproduce a dynamic range of 96dB, and the batteries will last nearly twice as long.

The infernal speaker is rubbish, but headphone monitoring is excellent. (My Olympus dictaphone manages a much higher volume through its internal speaker ... so it is possible).

I've used it with both alkaline and NIMh AA cells and both work well, but select NiMh in system settings.

Excellent, Wish I had bought one years-ago.

Review:
I wanted an easy to use, quick set up recorder, no fuss no thrills, for capturing ideas as and when they happen. Although I've only been using the DR 05 for a few weeks, I have already become used to it. Very quick to set up. and great results. Tascam has been a name I grew up with, and have used the old porta-studio over the years. So their expertise, was one of the main things I took in to consideration.
For the money, it's a bargain, it's compact, yet quite sturdy and most importantly it sounds great. I would definitely recommend

Pros: +
very easy and quick to use. Once you have set recording levels you don't need to re-set each time. Great for recording instantly the moment an idea comes to you . I have used other recorders and I hate having to step through menus just to get started, no problem with this recorder.Press the nice big red button once and recording is armed .Press again and you are recording.Very easy to get the files onto a computer and load into your DAW.Sound quality is excellent.

Cons: -
I haven't found any bad points at this price.

Efficiently, but still very safely, packaged. Includes individual manuals for each language, a minor feature which makes life much easier. It includes all the options you could want. The only thing I find lacking is that it includes only a 3.5mm stereo input. Adaptors prevent this being an issue, and this device is so well-priced that I really can't complain.

Pros: +
the sound quality is second to none..

Cons: -
takes a bit of time to get used to as the instructions could be a bit more user friendly for the amatures..

Review:
I have until now, been using a Zoom H4, which is great value if you use the bundled Cubasis.
But I need a reliable EASY TO USE recorder. That ain't the Zoom. But the Tascam is a joy to use.
Manual is rubbish and omits a couple of things (extension microphones, Phantom Power???)
But on balance, like most Tascam products, very professional and lastly, well made.

Review:
It's a good thing easy to use and the recording quality is great. Serious playback is best done on an external device via the line out (a better built-in speaker wouldn't have hurt, but then it is a recorder first and foremost). I doubt I will even use all the features of this so unless you want over-dub or 4 track - basically, if you are happy to do one take and want a versatile plug-and-play recorder, you might as well save the extra money and buy this.

Context I compose guitar pieces in 'art music' at an amateur level and this is a useful complement to written scores and practice.

Review:
This Dr 05 is my first recorder so I am trying to figure it out by using the online manual which is much more in depth than the one provided. The sound quality is good if you set the quality to at least 192 k for dictation and recommend 24 bit wav for your music / band recordings.
I'd also recommend a carry strap for neck and a hard or padded closed case as mics are unguarded like expensive ones.
For the price this is the best you will get and I will use mine a lot for conversations / interviews music / video sound etc. I googled other brands but quality build and lastability of this swayed me. Also this is nice and lightweight fitting in shirt pocket easy. Remember the strap could save it if working over hard surfaces. It feeds through a hole on bottom. Will make on myself. Earphones are a must as speaker is not great at all.
I am glad I bought this and just wish ( being clueless right now) I had someone to take me through the long online manual as it does a lot for its price.
For first timers this is probably the one.

I have only had the DR-05 V2 a single day but it appears to be working well and is simple to use. But I require a longer period of use in order to provide a full review. I was not expecting the V2 model but I was pleased to receive it. I can use its extra features. Batteries were included but NO carry case!!!

Review:
Quite easy to use the basic functions....pretty intuitive. The downloadable reference manual is good if you need to do more than the basic stuff.

Only had it a couple of days but the quality of the product is good and the sound quality is excellent. Tried it with my baby grand and a steel stringed guitar and results were excellent. My only slightly negative comment is the recorded file through in ear headphones is a bit over the top high frequencies (treble) but the on board treble- setting on equaliser corrects this reasonably although I would have liked more control. Haven't tried transferring files to PCs or daw where I'm sure I could adjust that easily. However for me the sound is clear and not hissy and can be adjusted to given reasonably good recordings from different distances. A good bit of kit for a very reasonable price. Will be very useful for capturing songwriting ideas.
