DR-40 Portable Digital Recorder description:

The Tascam DR-40 Portable Digital Recorder is a handheld 4-track recorder that gives you flexibility needed to record anything, anywhere.

The Tascam DR-40 features adjustable mics, four-track recording and extended battery life, captures up to four tracks from built-in, high-quality condenser microphones, XLR mic or line inputs. The internal mics are adjustable from XY to AB position, helping you to tailor your recording to the sound of the room.

You can also use condenser microphones with the great-sounding TASCAM microphone preamps that provide phantom power, recording at up to 96kHz/24-bit resolution. It accommodates balanced XLR or 1/4" line inputs using locking Neutrik Combo jacks. The DR-40 accepts SD or SDHC cards up to 32GB, and a 2GB card is included.

Once recorded, play back your takes with EQ and the optional Level Align feature to avoid volume jumps. A stereo reverb effect is also built-in, as well as a speaker and chromatic tuner. Transfer your recordings to any computer using the USB 2.0 jack. Other features include overdub mode, variable speed playback, limiting and low cut filter, and much more – all with TASCAM’s simple-to-use interface.

The main features of the DR 40 include:

Pros: +
Sound quality is very very good,i compared it to a mic soundcard setup and the results were the same. The tascam is so simply and quick to use its just a waste of time to do it any other way.

Cons: -
none considering price

Pros: +
Good specification compared with the rival Zoom H2 at a price well below the zoom H4. Good balance of features and cost. Ability to connect to XLR inputs at this price point. Ease of use with well thought out menu system.

Pros: +
Great for on-the-go recording. Cheap. Really easy to use (only used the manual to upgrade).

Cons: -
Needed to be upgraded when I first bought it. Also not as many effects as the Zoom H4N but the price makes up for that. Would prefer more silent pre-amps but it's a budget device and you get what you pay for.

Review:
Nice product, great for the price, does eat batteries so if you want to record all day the DR100 MkIII (which I also have) is a better option with better quality and usability ... but then it is 3 times the price. Solid piece of kit

Review:
I thought this recorder was really good value for money. I've carried out a few recordings with my Rode NTG 1 as well as the built in microphones. Both types of recordings have turned out great and the device itself is relatively straight forward to work on a basic level.

Have some form of cheap windshield for the built in microphones would have been a good addition to the recorder if not a connector for the screw at the back of the device for tripods.

Review:
This is an extremely versatile recorder that has loads of useful features including external balanced inputs XLR and 1/4 TRS for line and mics- the recorder will also provide phantom power for condensers. The integral mics are pretty decent too with adjustable positions. Recording quality is excellent with various mp3 and wav options. It will also record 4 channels.
The menu structure is straightforward and intuitive.
Compact size and has a decent feel about it.
The supplied user manual is very comprehensive and there is a more detailed version on line. The recorder comes with- a 2gB micro sd memory card and micro adapter; A usb cable for data transfer or powering the recorder and a set of AA batteries.
I was a bit disappointed that dv247 didn't have it in stock in Romford as I would have liked to have seen/ tried before purchase, but there are plenty of reviews of this product and others on youtube and it was free delivered within a couple of days after I placed my order. I'm not disappointed at all with this recorder and have already made high quality recordings with it using the integral mics; an external dynamic mic and the main +4dBu output from a mixing desk

As this is the first purchase I have made from dv247 I would say that their price for this was the best I could find and they delivered quicky by UPS with excellent packaging. An overall good experience

Review:
So far it seems like a very capable unit, the only deficiency being the lack of a 3.5mm PIP plug to allow the use of non professional microphones.
