The Epiphone Dot Studio 6-String Electric Guitar Cherry is a 6-string semi-acoustic guitar, incorporating Epiphone's great hollow-body design and build quality in a brilliantly affordable instrument.
The Epiphone Ltd Dot Studio features a Mahogany Body, semi-hollow body and top with 'F' holes, and the easily-playable mahogany neck is topped by a rosewood fingerboard with 22 frets.
In the electronics department, the Epiphone Limited Edition Dot Studio is equipped with a pair of black, uncovered, Alnico V Classic Humbucker pickups for vintage rock, blues and jazz tones. The pickups are controlled by the Volume and Tone knobs, while there is also a 3-way pickup selector switch.
Additional appointments include a LockTone Tune-o-Matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece and Grover machine heads for accurate and stable tuning.
The Epiphone Limited Edition Dot Studio offers a durable and well-built instrument that looks and sounds great.
Ive had this guitar for about 5 years now. At first, I was quite enamored with it, but over time, Ive grown less and less excited about it.
The pluses: Came with a great set-up. Good intonation, low action, no fret buzz.. The neck has a nice finish that doesnt stick to your fingers, and it looks fairly cool totally stripped down from the more expensive dot series. Frets are a decent finish, and no complaints about the finger board. Its also super light to carry around, which is nice for a long set.
Now for the negatives:
First, the pick-ups. For the price, I realise I cant expect top-of-the-line Gibson or Seymour Duncans, but these are pretty much the most basic pick-ups you can get in an Epiphone. They sound incredibly muddy, lack any clarity, and the tone knob has to go to 10 before it makes any difference at all. The lack of dual controls is a disadvantage of this guitar also over the standard Dot. Machine heads are about as cheap as you can get, pick-up selector feels very cheap and on mine, sometimes doesnt work. I have wanted to upgrade the pick-ups for a while on this thing, but its unbelievable lack of sustain has prevented me from doing that. This will hold a note for approximately 5 seconds, despite being hollow-body and a glued in neck.
All said, there are worse guitars out there, but this one is best avoided. It isnt much cheaper than the Epi Dot Standard, which will give you better hardware, more features, and a better sound.
