Neóni from Instruo is an analog oscillator with extensive sound shaping and complex modulation options. The highlight of this tone generator is certainly the Thru-Zero FM capability, which is alternatively available with normal FM. Unlike normal FM, where an oscillator stops momentarily when a negative voltage pulls the frequency down to 0 Hz, Neóni reverses the polarity of its waveforms until a positive voltage brings it back above 0 Hz. This behavior allows for complex waveforms with fewer non-harmonic sidebands. The wavefolder uses the triangle waveform and controls the number of wave convolutions. The circuit produces new sounds whose bandwidth ranges from subtle overtone enhancement to total spectral devastation. Often these sounds have a rather metallic character, but this should not be confused with ring modulation. The CV input can optionally be used to animate the split-saw. The oscillator synchronization also turns out to be more complex with Neóni: Hardsync can optionally be applied to the rising or falling waveform, Softsync takes care of the entire wave. Sonically, Neóni is an exciting candidate for analog sounds of all kinds that could be located in West Coast realms.
