The Modor DR-2 is a digital drum synthesizer with a sequencer that is manufactured in Belgium. The futuristically designed instrument has a very unique sound and clearly stands out from analogue classics of the TR series or even a Machinedrum. The purely digital sound generation is based on synthesis algorithms, of which 18 models are implemented. The sound spectrum ranges from dry TR-like sounds to crisp, minimalist percussion to solid hardcore and industrial drums. The six tracks of the DR-2 can be filled with the synthesis models at will, it doesn't matter if a model is used multiple times with different settings. Special features like a reverse mode and parameter locks in the sequencer provide plenty of variety when programming.

Sophisticated design

The asymmetrical control panel of the DR-2 may seem unfamiliar at first glance, but after a short time, you can create your own sounds because the control structure and the signal flow are logically designed and several parameters of the algorithms behave in the same way. Thanks to complete MIDI implementation, 64 memory locations for drum kits and an excellent sequencer that knows a few tricks, the DR-2 is absolutely suitable for live and studio use. All connections on the back are staggered, so you don't have to sacrifice any additional height units for the cables when installing in a rack (6U). The six individual outputs can optionally be used as inserts with external effects units, the processed signal is then output at the stereo output. In addition to the power supply, the included accessories include a set of rack ears for installation in a 19" rack and a pair of wooden side panels for those who love the vintage charm of wood on synthesizers.

The sound generation

For loading the six tracks (A-F), the DR-2 holds 18 synthesis algorithms that focus on Bass drums, snare, cymbals, claps, Toms and other sounds. Each algorithm contains up to twelve broad parameters with which to shape the sounds. In terms of handling, the Pitch and Amp sections are kept the same for all algorithms. The individual operation is done via knobs X, Y, Z and T, which make the crucial difference. There are 64 drum kits for storing the drum sounds. These contain the composition of the six tracks together with all parameters and also the settings of the compressor.

The 18 synthesis models are composed as follows:

The sequencer

The DR-2's chaser sequencer is as easy to use as the popular classics from the 80's, all on the fly without having to stop the machine! 96 patterns with a length of up to 128 steps can be stored in the DR-2. Whole songs can be programmed as well, there are 32 memory slots for this. The sequencer is packed with live-ready features: as befits a modern drum machine, parameter locks are programmable. The highlight, however, might be the Reverse Mode. This reverses the envelopes so that the corresponding steps sound played backwards! Of course, Accent, Flam and Shuffle are also available to set the beats in motion after old fathers' custom. Various random options involve set and/or unset steps, mutating the sound or tend to favour the alpha and beta variations. Beta is always a variant of the sound stored on the respective track that has been modified by a parameter, this is always alpha.
