The Scope Labs Periscope is a microphone designed by inventor Paavo Kurkela and sound engineer Mattia Sartori that is particularly suitable for acoustic instruments and vocals. Unlike most other microphone manufacturers, the development team did not focus on optimal transient response or consistent polar pattern. Instead, the Periscope anticipates sound-processing steps that are normally left until the mixing process. The electronics built into this microphone are specifically designed to meet the requirements of modern audio production and provide level-dependent compression and saturation.
The effect ranges from a slight enhancement of spatiality and fatness to significant compression to heavy "sucking" and strong saturation artifacts. By choosing the placement and distance from the sound source, compression and saturation can be fine-tuned , always guaranteeing a mix-ready, assertive and musical result. At the same time, of course, attention was paid during development to matching the frequency response to the capsule so that no unwanted resonances occur.
Especially drum overheads, ambience and e.g. acoustic guitar benefit immensely from the properties of this condenser microphone and receive directly during recording actually everything they need for a stable placement in the mix. Just take your time and listen to the sound samples linked below...
