I have a large collection of high end bases including Fender Elites, Kubicki’s, Gibson Thunderbirds, MM Stingrays as well as custom builds to name a few.
I purchased the Squier for a few reasons, albeit the first and ultimate reason was so that I could introduce my child to the world of bass playing and let them have their own instrument to do with what they may.
The second reason for choosing this bass was that if my child didn’t take to the instrument then I would happily make use of it, without seeing it as a waste.
I’ve always regarded these bases as entry level albeit well respected at this level, however over the years my perception of the reputation and quality of these instruments has increased, and for good reason.
The main thing I was drawn to on this instrument was the paint finish. The tone of the sunburst looks stunning with a faint grain popping through. The anodised pick guard looks fantastic, not to mention the vintage tint to the maple neck. All in all at first glance the visual aesthetics are incredible, and in person it’s even more of a beauty.
The construction of the bass is solid, the instrument feels good, plays well and even sounds good. I only had to make few minor adjustments to the truss rod and bridge saddles to set the bow and action to how I personally prefer.
All in all, for the price point this is a lovely instrument and one well worth considering.
This is definitely a bass I would be glad to give to a beginner, an intermediate, and is even a bass I enjoy playing myself. Well done to Squier. For all you Fender lovers, don’t be put off by the name on the headstock.
The only issue I found with this bass was with the strings. Whoever has strung the bass during assembly/setup has not allowed for enough string length. On the G string in particular there was barely a full turn around the tuning shaft. I therefore had to re-string the bass with a new set to ensue the correct stable tension when tuning.
